What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website places in your browser. Local storage is a similar mechanism that keeps data in the browser without sending it with every request. Both let a site remember something between pages or between visits. Cookies set by the site you are visiting are first-party cookies; cookies set by another domain through content on the page are third-party cookies. This site is operated by Seamark Ridge Publishing Ltd, Harbourlight Works, 27 Copperwick Street, Deptford, London SE8 3QN, and this policy should be read with the privacy policy.
How consent works here
When you first visit, a banner offers three choices: Accept All, Reject Non-Essential and Preferences. Accept All allows every category below. Reject Non-Essential allows only the essential category. Preferences opens a panel in the banner where you can allow analytics and functional storage separately and save the result. Your choice is stored in your browser so the banner does not return on every page. You can change it at any time by clearing the stored choice in your browser, after which the banner reappears.
Categories in use
| Category | Name | Purpose | Type and duration | Requires consent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | jp-cookie-consent | Records which categories you allowed or refused so the banner does not reappear and so optional storage is only used when permitted. | First-party local storage; remains until you clear it or change your choice. | No — necessary for the site to respect your choice. |
| Analytics | Analytics measurement cookies | Would count page views and record how visitors move between sheets, in aggregate and without identifying you, to show which subjects are read and where pages need work. The site's analytics setting is described in the privacy policy; any cookie in this category is set only after you allow it. | First-party cookies; typically expire between one day and two years depending on the tool. | Yes. |
| Functional | Display preference storage | Remembers presentation choices such as whether you have collapsed a panel or chosen a text setting, so they persist between visits. | First-party local storage; remains until cleared. | Yes. |
The site does not set advertising or marketing cookies and does not embed third-party social media widgets. Pages that link to other websites do not set cookies from those websites unless you follow the link.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Every modern browser lets you view, block and delete cookies and local storage. Blocking essential storage will cause the banner to appear on each visit, but the site will otherwise work.
- Google Chrome — Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies or Site settings, then Cookies and site data. You can clear data for a single site or all sites.
- Mozilla Firefox — Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Cookies and Site Data. Manage Data lists sites individually.
- Apple Safari — Preferences, then Privacy, then Manage Website Data. On iPhone and iPad, Settings, then Safari, then Advanced, then Website Data.
- Microsoft Edge — Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, then Manage and delete cookies and site data.
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito mode that discards cookies and local storage when the window is closed, and a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal. Where we can detect a Global Privacy Control signal we treat it as a refusal of non-essential categories.
Cookies set by our processors
Our hosting provider may set a short-lived technical cookie for load balancing or security screening. Such a cookie carries no personal information beyond a session identifier and falls within the essential category. The provider's own documentation describes any such cookie in detail.
Changes to this policy
If we add or remove a category, change a tool or alter retention, we will update the table above and, where the change requires fresh consent, reset stored choices so the banner appears again. Questions about cookies can be sent to [email protected].
